The estate was founded in 1365 by the house of Bosq who named the vineyard Haut Lafitte, then in the seventeenth century, the Scotsman George Smith bought the estate, which he renamed Smith Haut Lafitte, he built the Charterhouse and exported the wines produced to England, thus contributing to their fame.

The 1959 classification for Graves wines confirmed their reputation by classifying the reds as grand crus. There remains the question of the classification of white wines, which does not only concern this area and feeds the debates of experts and connoisseurs.
