Located on the outskirts of the medieval town of Saint-Émilion on underground quarries, the Clos Fourtet owes its name to the "Camp Fourtet", a fortified place that was used to protect Saint-Émilion in the Middle Ages. Made famous by its owners, the lords of Figeac in the eighteenth century, the walled estate containing the vineyard in one piece and a residence built during the Ancien Régime.
