Founded in 1786 by George Taylor and Alexander Milne, the distillery was then called Milltown, It was in 1949 that it was renamed Strathisla following its acquisition by James Barclay, one of the members of the Chivas group, this whisky is used for most of the production in the composition of the Chivas Regal and Royal Salute blend.

The reputation of the distillery comes from old or very old vintages distributed by independent bottlers.

This is a 1972 vintage, bottled in 2013. As of 2018, bottles labelled in the this style became known as Gordon & MacPhail's Distillery Labels range.
