Its name comes from the Scottish Gaelic Lag a'mhor aig which means "the cave of the bay", Laphroaig is noted both for its smoky style, The whisky produced there can be consumed as is or used in the composition of the Islay Mist and Long John blends.

The distillery was established by Donald and Alexander Johnston in 1815, Subsequently, the distillery passed into the hands of the Royal Army, then British Whitbread among others and finally Suntory, In 1994, Prince of Wales, Charles of Wales, granted the "Royal Warrant" to the distillery.
