The Macallan distillery was founded by Alexander Reid, a barley farmer and teacher. The original name of the area was 'Maghellan', which came from the Gallic word 'magh', which means fertile soil, and 'Ellan', from the monk St Fillan, which was closely related to the church that stood in the grounds of The Macallan Estate until 1400. Farmers had already been making whisky on their Speyside farms for several centuries.

Presented in early 2021, Down to Work is the result of the Speyside giant once again collaborating with acclaimed British artist, Sir Peter Blake. Famously the designer of The Beatles iconic Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band record sleeve,
